The sacroiliac joint is the joint between the sacrum and ilium bones of the pelvis. The joint is present on both sides of the pelvis. This joint is very strong and is responsible for absorbing shock, allowing torque rotations and supporting the weight of the upper extremity.

When inflammation occurs in this joint, often you will experience pain in the lower back, that can run into the buttocks and thighs, this can make day to day activities nearly impossible depending on the intensity of the pain.  This ailment is often seen more in women than men; this is as a result of frequent hormonal changes that occur in women such as menstruation, pregnancy, and lactation.

During these hormonal changes the ligaments in a woman’s body often become more relaxed allowing for stretching and expanding, this can usher in the symptoms and pain as a result of an unstable joint.  While there are not many tests that can definitively diagnose this ailment, most Doctors can isolate this diagnosis by injecting an anesthetic into the joint, and if the patient relates significant improvement of pain, there is more certainty as to what the source of your back pain is.

Natural remedies include:

  1. Ice pack: Ice works against inflammation and can numb the pain.
  2. Aloe Vera: This plant when crushed and applied to the affected area, has powerful anti-inflammatory properties, thus work to decrease your pain.
  3. Mustard oil: Rubbed into the affected area works to provide nutrients to torn tendons and ligaments, bringing faster healing to the affected area.
  4. Turmeric: When made into a paste and applied to the affected area works to relieve inflammation, and your pain.
  5. Castor oil: Provide nutrients to muscles, tendons, and ligaments and help to decrease inflammation

One of the greatest enemies to ward off back pain is staying active; this combats stiffness and keeps tendons and ligaments that stabilize your joints healthy and active. When all else fails, a trip to the chiropractor does a body good as well.
